Printed Magazine: "Pressure on crops forces further rise in food prices"
Food inflation is pressuring hospitality industries to have rises in the food prices. Media attention can help caterers and restaurants to explain the rises in tariff to the customers. With its goal to become the largest hotel franchiser in Europe by 2015, Accor made deals with Fairview and All Seasons. I am not so sure how becoming the largest hotel franchiser will help improve the services offered. Of course, being global can make the business international; however, is it possible to manage so much at the same time?

Issue Date: 20-26 August 2010
Printed Magazine: "The power of interest rates"
VAT rise of 20% can add 2.13% to applicable good and services cost. Thousands of businesses will be “wiped out” and the customers will feel “poor”; however it’s important to respect this demand because government’s decision is based on current circumstance. The expression “the customers will feel ‘poor’” was interesting to me because I also felt the same in some restaurants. I realized the significance of finding the balance among VAT, food cost, and profit.

The debate on drinks pricing concerns “whether or not restrictions should be on the basis of minimum retail prices or on the basis of prices controlled by reference to cost.” I think having a unity on drinks pricing will help the hotel industry increase its revenue in F&B area because the drink pricing is similar everywhere.

The school-leavers will be dedicated to their job and motivated to take the opportunity offered by Wetherspoon.

Online Article: "Considerate Hotel Awards introduce two new categories"
Considerate Hoteliers Association added 2 new awards, “Considerate Small Accommodation Provider of the Year Award for establishments with 10 bedrooms or less and the Considerate Supplier of the Year Award.” The introduction of the new awards will globalize the hotel industries as award opportunities are broadened to more hotels. I think the addition of the two awards will motivate smaller hotels to compete with the bigger hotels by encouraging involvement in awards nomination.

Online Article: "UK colleges deliver real benefits for SMEs"
According to a survey held by Association of Colleges (AoC), small and medium sized businesses (SMEs) benefited in the areas of productivity and skills development by training their staffs at UK colleges. I think training staffs at colleges is a great way to improve productivity when the businesses are looking at long term effect. Online Article: "All suite hotel Wellesley claims to be London’s first six-star property"
The Wellesley, all-suite hotel which will open in 2012, is going to be a “six-star hotel” according to Rhimesong. I think claiming to be a “six-star hotel” is a great way to start, putting enough pressure for the hotel to be the best and intimidating the competitor hotels to be ready for the best.
